Malawi Here I Come!!!

November 21, 2015 by Jocelyn King

blog post good one

Hello! My name is Jocelyn King and I am a 4th year student at the University of Ottawa. I am studying International Development and Globalization in the Faculty of Social Science. I have been selected for the position of Youth Economic and Entrepreneurship Intern with the National Youth Council of Malawi starting in January.

I am excited for this internship as I have always wanted to gain experience by working in another country. For my program, my interest is in Sub-Saharan Africa, so having the opportunity to work in Malawi is amazing. I have always been interested in travelling and experiencing new cultures. I have been on 2 mission trips, one to the Dominican Republic and one to Peru. These experiences opened my eyes to how other people live and view the world.

During my internship, I am hoping to meet new people and learn more about myself in the process. I hope this opportunity will allow me to challenge my views by engaging with a new culture. I am unsure what to expect when I arrive in Malawi, but excited for the opportunity to work in a country I have never been to before. My first task when I arrive will be to explore my area and to try a new food. From there, I want to meet the people who I will be working with and start learning from them.

I am so excited and grateful that I have been accepted for this position, and I am looking forward to this new adventure!

Jocelyn, how long will you be in Malawi? Where will you be based? I am bringing a group of University of Lethbridge undergrad students in May 2016 to do health promotion around malaria and HIV. If you are still there, maybe we can meet up so that my students can learn about your work. Malawi is a beautiful country, and I am sure you will enjoy it!

Hi Jean, unfortunately I will only be in Malawi for 3 months,so I won’t be there in May.
Let me know if you have any questions I can answer once i’m there!
