Destination Vietnam

Andre Tokarczyk

Having completed my third year in Conflict Studies in Human Rights at the University of Ottawa I felt the need go beyond the classroom; to gain  real world experience that would allow me to explore my abilities and would contribute to an organization with a positive mandate. I felt I needed to apply to be a Student Services Intern at the Hoa Sua School for Disadvantaged Youth in Hanoi, Vietnam because of the organizations positive mandate and its success in empowering youth through education and skills training.

In my position I hope to be able to interact with students and help them excel in everything they do. Also to help staff with any problems they may encounter and to help them achieve the best results possible. It will be my job to help organize activities and ensure equal representation of both women and men. Not to mention a wide range of other responsibilities. During my placement my goal is to provide the best assistance I can and to have a positive impact on the people I will be working with. I hope to share my passions with students and coworkers to make this experience even better.

I am very excited about this placement in Vietnam, I have never been anywhere in Asia and this will be a completely new environment for me. I hope to learn as much as I possibly can about Vietnam’s history and culture during the time I am there. I especially look forward to trying new foods that are nothing like I have ever had before and absorbing all of Vietnam’s sights and sounds. Having the opportunity to be engaged with people directly and learning about their experiences  is what I look forward to most.  Despite being nervous about this new environment I know that what I learn in Vietnam will stay with me forever and I am grateful for this opportunity.

I have no idea what to expect in terms of what it will be like living in Vietnam, I am approaching this experience with an open mind and a willingness to try anything and everything in order to absorb as much as possible in the time that I will be there. I have always loved learning about new cultures and experiencing them first hand. When I land in Hanoi my first goal will be to create a positive connection with those I will be working with in order to try and create a strong relationship.

Everyday I move closer to my departure and my excitement builds. I know that this will be a positive experience for me and I hope I will have just as positive an impact on those I will be working with.

All the best,
