Wowee I’m going to Malawi!

September 16, 2015

My name is Tanya Vall and I will be travelling to Lilongwe, Malawi for a four-month internship. I am a second year student majoring in Anthropology and minoring in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s studies at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

I have always shown an interest in international development and gender equality issues. I love learning new cultures and meeting new people. Three years ago I spent three weeks volunteering in an orphanage in Burkina Faso. The trip changed my life forever and is what spearheaded my desire to go back to school so I can be of better help where needed.

I will be a Youth Participation and Empowerment Intern working for the National Youth Council of Malawi. This placement spoke to me because I have spent time working with youth to feel inclusive in their community and I can see the difference it makes in their lives. I think this is truly important because youth are the future of the world and to make a positive future we should start from the ground up.

I am looking forward to connecting with people and making a positive impact wherever I can.
